Development of Non-coated Double Injection Eyewear with TR XE 4668

Abstract
Purpose: TR90 and ULTEM are widely used to produce eyeglass frames. TR90 is suitable of various types of injection molding, but it has a reduced performance compared to that of urethane. The purpose of this study was to develop an original eyewear design by solving the processing problems and selecting a lightweight material that can eliminate the occurrence of defects during coating and double injection.

Methods: TR XE 4668, which is suitable for use in manufacturing double injection molding frames, was selected as an injection material by analyzing its physical properties, such as impact strength, density, tensile strength, bending strength, flexural modulus, injection flow, and transparency. In order to reduce trial and error in manufacturing, we created a simulation using the Moldex3D R14 program and fabricated molds and prototypes.

Results: Through the injection molding analysis, it was possible to eliminate various factors that lead to defect occurrence that could be issued in the process. As a result of testing, the durability was improved to less than 1/10 of the reference value, and the results of the bridge deformation test and tensile strength test were also excellent.

Conclusions: Based on the TR XE 4668 injection molding material, the double injection molding process reduces post-processing processes, such as coating and bonding, which are shortcomings of the single injection method, thereby eliminating the inevitable defective elements in each process element and improving product competitiveness and reliability. In addition, the results of a certification test of spectacle performance of the mold-made finished products were excellent.
